A BRIEF ORGANISATION HISTORY:
Marurui United Youth Organization (MUYOG) is a Community Based Organization founded in 2003, as an endeavor by the youth of Marurui (a slum/estate in Kasarani) to seek alternative means for addressing poverty by engaging the youth and the public in proactive and productive ventures. Today MUYOG has grown in strength and impact, gaining immeasurable visibility, authority and legitimacy at the local, national and international level as a youth Change Agent. It has also extended its boundaries by focusing on the destitute children to pre-empt their engaging in antisocial behaviours. Muyog is registered by the government of Kenya and has a bank account which is run by three (3) signatories.
AREAS OF TECHNICAL FOCUS AND GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION:
MUYOG is located in the sprawling Marurui Jua Kali Slums in Roysambu location, Kasarani district. It focuses mainly on the welfare of the youths and destitute children of school going age who have been neglected by their single mothers to prevent them from engaging in antisocial behaviours and to rehabilitate those already involved in such behaviours. Such behaviours include: social and political manipulation, drug abuse and trafficking, commercial sex work and crime, among others. These antisocial behaviours led to loss of life, rape, formation of illegal criminal groups, Gender based violence, increased HIV/AIDS prevalence, school dropouts that led to premarital marriages and unwanted pregnancies. In addition, MUYOG also addresses the issue of poverty by initiating Income Generating Activities (IGAs) where the youths are actors and beneficiaries. In this respect, the following IGAs are in place: cyber café with 12 computers, 4 rental business premises, 2 handcarts, chairs and spades-all for hire and garbage collection.
